Analysis of dietary data from 204 countries over 30 years showed that the biggest risk factor for chronic kidney disease was a lack of fruit and vegetable intake. Excessive sodium intake ranked third, and excessive consumption of processed meats and red meat also had a negative impact on kidney health. In particular, the risk of chronic kidney disease increased sharply after the age of 65, and the risk associated with excessive sugary drink consumption was higher in people with higher economic status. To maintain kidney health, it is important not only to eat lightly but also to consume enough fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and to reduce intake of processed meats, red meat, and sugary drinks.
