Since the revision of the Nationality Act in 2011, South Korea has allowed limited dual nationality. Dual nationals must swear an oath not to exercise foreign nationality, and military service obligations, tax payments, and criminal penalties are applied identically to single nationals. Dual nationals cannot enjoy foreign benefits within South Korea, and their appointment as public officials may be restricted in national security-related fields. The current number of dual nationals in South Korea is estimated at around 200,000, reflecting the international trend toward allowing dual nationality.
