A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores Island in Indonesia has resulted in at least 54 deaths and 135 injuries. Strong aftershocks continue, displacing nearly 12,800 people. Roads have been severed by landslides and other damage in the affected areas, making it difficult to deliver aid and leaving communities isolated. The Indonesian government has declared a state of emergency and is conducting relief efforts, but residents in the affected areas are expressing anger over the lack of government support. Flores Island has also experienced earthquake and tsunami damage in the past.
