Seeing the sea for the first time in 10 years..

Our family often visits Sukabumi's Pelabuhan Ratu beach..

4-5 hours when traffic's clear..

have to be prepared for around 10 hours when it's jammed,


but you can eat lobster cheaply..

the beach is huge,

and the waves crash hard enough that people surf even in the shallows..


We enjoy playing in waves strong enough to knock us off our feet even in the shallow water,

and the cheap hotel prices are another draw for us..


We always stay at the same hotel..

calling it a "hotel" is generous, it's more like a 2-story cottage,

but the price is low.. and it's decent enough..



I've gone with my mother, and also with my younger aunt..

as a family we've probably been five or six times..


But when we get there

and head barefoot toward the shore, there's always someone who comes to mind..


My mother..?


Sorry, but it's not my mother..

it's my younger aunt who comes to mind..


I woke up early one morning and my aunt wasn't there..

turns out she'd put on a straw hat and was walking along that vast sandy beach..

and there's one line I still haven't forgotten..


She said it had been 10 years since she'd seen the sea..


I'm from Masan.. my aunt's from Busan..

both places surrounded by sea wherever you look, if you just decide to go..

but my aunt said she hadn't seen the sea in 10 years..

trying to hold onto the smell of the sea and the feel of sand under bare feet, after 10 years..

that's probably why she went for a walk so early in the morning..



She'd wanted to see the sea so badly, I could feel it..

but because of the hardships of life..

only because her nephew happened to be here

did she come all the way to distant Indonesia and see it, after 10 years..

even having to scrape together vacation time with difficulty to come see it..


She must have carried that vast Pelabuhan Ratu beach in her heart when she left..


What is it that makes someone want to go see the sea

and yet keeps them from going..?


People like me might just not want to go because it's a hassle,

but for someone else who wants to see the sea,

this thing called society grabs their ankle and won't let go..

    [KR] 그러게요... 제가 발리에 살 때 어머니께서 오셨던 적이 있습니다. 발리에서 뵙는 어머니의 모습은 무척이나 활동적이신 모습이셨어요. 물론... 여행 같은 느낌으로 아들집에 온거니 그러셨을 수 있는데... 한국에서의 모습보다 제가 느끼기엔 더 활동적이시고 밝아 보이셨습니다. 평생 귓병, 콧병을 달고 사시는 분이신데 기후 탓인지 인니에 오시면 그런게 없다고 하시더라구요. 어르신들이 생각보다 따뜻한 동남아에서 더 건강하신 모습을 보이시는 것 같아요. 일치월장님 이모님도... 그 어떤 이유가 되었든 몸이 가벼워 지시니... 더 많은 것을 느끼시고 싶으셨을 수 도 있겠다 싶네요. 춥지도... 덥지도 않은 바닷가 산책은 누구나 하고 싶어질테니까요. ^^

    [ID] Beginilah... ketika saya tinggal di Bali, ibu saya pernah datang berkunjung. Ketika bertemu dengan ibu di Bali, penampilannya sangat aktif dan bersemangat. Tentu saja, mungkin karena dia datang ke rumah anaknya dengan perasaan seperti sedang berlibur, namun dibandingkan dengan bagaimana dia terlihat di Korea, menurut saya dia terlihat lebih aktif dan lebih ceria. Dia adalah orang yang sepanjang hidupnya menderita penyakit telinga dan hidung, tetapi ketika dia datang ke Indonesia, dia mengatakan bahwa tidak ada masalah itu. Sepertinya para lansia menunjukkan penampilan yang lebih sehat di kawasan Asia Tenggara yang lebih hangat dari yang diperkirakan. Bibi Anda juga... apapun alasannya, ketika tubuhnya terasa lebih ringan, mungkin saja dia ingin merasakan dan mengalami lebih banyak hal. Karena semua orang pasti ingin berjalan-jalan di tepi pantai yang tidak terlalu dingin dan tidak terlalu panas. ^^
