- Synology reversed its controversial policy of restricting the use of third-party hard drives (HDDs) in NAS devices after sales of its 2025 NAS models significantly decreased.
- The initial policy, which forced users to purchase Synology brand HDDs, was widely criticized as anti-consumer and received backlash from users and negative reviews.
- With the release of DSM 7.3, Synology quietly lifted the restrictions, allowing users to once again use HDDs from brands such as Seagate and WD without limitations. This restored the brand's popularity by regaining its flexibility.
There are things that need to be broken down for them to work... I use a Synology NAS myself, but...
Maybe the NAS I'm using now will be Synology's last product. I don't think I'll use it anymore...
The cost-effectiveness is declining... and the policies are not to my liking.... I think I'll use a HNO or build my own NAS.
