Gyeonggi Province experienced a prolonged heat wave over the first weekend of August, with the highest perceived temperature exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. As a result, residents flocked to caves and shopping malls to escape the heat. Local governments are working hard to prevent heatstroke by operating pavement sprinkler systems and installing refrigerated water coolers. Gyeonggi Province reported 355 cases of heat-related illnesses from May to July, and plans to strengthen safety inspections at outdoor workplaces, such as construction sites, due to the prolonged heat wave. Notably, last month, a foreign worker who was working outdoors in Pyeongtaek City died from heatstroke.
