A study on the best way to blow your nose by Dr. Tokuji Uno, former honorary professor at Asahikawa Medical University in Japan, won the Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine. The research results, published in 1977, showed that blowing one nostril at a time for a longer period is more effective for mucus discharge than blowing both nostrils simultaneously. It also stated that while blowing hard can cause pressure changes in the ears, it does not lead to middle ear infections. This study exemplifies the Ig Nobel Prize's characteristic of recognizing scientific research that "makes people laugh and then think." This year, the Ig Nobel Prize ceremony was moved from the United States to Switzerland.
