According to industry sources on the 12th, Samsung Electronics has decided not to apply a 'variable aperture' camera to its Galaxy smartphones. As a result, the Galaxy S27 series scheduled to be released in the first half of next year will not be equipped with a variable aperture camera.

Samsung Electronics has been developing variable apertures with multiple camera module partners such as Samsung Electro-Mechanics and MCnex. The industry saw this as a move to apply it to the main camera of Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung Electronics previously equipped its 'Galaxy S9' and 'Galaxy S10' models released in 2018 and 2019 with variable aperture cameras. However, since 2020, it has not applied variable apertures and replaced the function through software correction.

Samsung Electronics' consideration of introducing a variable aperture camera was to compete with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which will be equipped with a variable aperture for the first time this year. As Apple, the largest competitor in the global smartphone market, moved preemptively, Samsung Electronics had no choice but to respond.

However, there were problems such as increased manufacturing costs and camera thickness due to the need to install new components. It is also analyzed that it was decided not to re-install because the functional effect of the variable aperture was not considered significant in terms of smartphone camera level.
