In the December 3, 1979 coup d'état, Kim Hyun-tae, former commander of the 707th Special Mission Unit, who participated in acts of insurrection such as the blockade of the National Assembly and the arrest of politicians, was indicted by a special prosecutor. Kim Hyun-tae, former commander, was sentenced to 18 years in prison, and Lee Sang-hyun, former commander of the 1st Airborne Special Warfare Brigade, was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Other defendants were also sentenced to heavy penalties. The special prosecution team criticized the defendants' active participation in acts of insurrection aimed at seizing power through martial law, and their attempts to paralyze the functions of key institutions such as the National Assembly and the Election Management Committee. In particular, Kim Hyun-tae, former commander, was accused of leading the breaking of the National Assembly windows, the arrest of lawmakers, and the power outage in the assembly hall, and his actions were evaluated as crimes unprecedented even under past authoritarian regimes.
