The government has decided to nationalize unregistered unclaimed land (544㎢, valued at approximately 2.2 trillion won). This land had its owners identified during surveys conducted under Japanese colonial rule but was never registered, making it difficult to establish clear ownership today. Under the new special law, initial owners and their heirs will first be given an opportunity to register the land; the remainder will be managed by the state. This policy is expected to improve residential environments and facilitate private development projects. The Ombudsman's Office has recommended institutional improvements to relevant government departments, with plans to enact the legislation within this year.
