Music Industry Launches Two Logos to Identify AI-Generated Music on Streaming Platforms

As AI increasingly establishes itself in music production and streaming platforms, several prominent players in the music industry have joined forces to create official labels. What is the purpose? To transparently identify audio created using AI.

Major industry leaders including the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (Ifpi), the Grammys, SAG-AFTRA, the Human Artistry Campaign, the American Association of Independent Music, the Worldwide Independent Network, and Impala have jointly created two logos designed to identify audio generated using artificial intelligence.

Distinguishing Between Complete Generation and Partial Assistance

The first logo (uppercase AI notation) represents music created entirely by artificial intelligence. The second logo (lowercase ai notation) indicates that AI was used only for specific elements (not replacing voice or primary instruments). Currently, there is no legal obligation to use these logos, but distributors and streaming platforms can adopt them immediately.

Listeners' Demand for Transparency

Vikki Oakley, CEO of Ifpi, and Mitch Glazier, chairman of RIAA, stated in a joint statement:

"Fans want to know whether generative AI has been used in the music they listen to and how it has been used. Given how important human artistry and authenticity are to music lovers worldwide, these labels will provide a transparent approach that is intuitive to understand and easy to implement at scale. We recognize the various ways AI can be used creatively, and as the adoption of generative AI labeling expands and technology evolves, we plan to provide additional information to fans."

Deezer Leading the Way

French platform Deezer, which has been at the forefront of preventing AI misuse, stated: "It is encouraging to see measures being taken toward a unified approach to generative AI in the music industry. As the first music streaming platform to detect AI-generated music, label it, and exclude it from algorithmic recommendations, Deezer is ready to support the development of frameworks across the industry."
