Cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) are increasing in northern China. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the situation and communicating with international partners to track reports of rising cases. However, current infection rates in the United States remain close to pre-pandemic baseline levels. HMPV is a relatively common respiratory virus that most people contract during childhood. Symptoms are similar to the common cold, though the infection can be more severe in elderly individuals, immunocompromised people, and children under 5 years of age. There is currently no vaccine for HMPV.
