1. Discipline That Controls Behavior (External Control)
It is used to correct immediate wrong behavior or induce specific behavior.
Emotional Discipline (Using Emotions): It is the most primitive method that utilizes praise and rewards (carrots) and admonition and punishment (sticks). While it has excellent immediate effects, it has the disadvantage that when emotions fade, attitudes return to their original state, so its sustainability is short.
Rational Discipline (Using Knowledge): It is a method of making children understand the reasons and basis of behavior at their eye level. Since it allows for self-judgment, its sustainability is long, but it can easily collapse due to momentary emotional desires (temptations).
2. Discipline That Forms Inner Character (Internal Control)
It develops the ability for children to control themselves on their own, even without their parents.
Habitual Discipline (Habit Formation): It is about getting children to acquire good behavior through their bodies. The key is designing a system that makes children feel 'pleasure (enjoyment)' in the act, rather than simply repeating it. Once it is established, it works on its own, but it can also change due to new experiences.
Values Discipline (Will Formation): It is discipline that develops the 'will' to overcome temptations. When children rationally understand information and emotionally accept it, 'belief (conviction, philosophy)' is created, and this belief accumulates to create strong will.
3. Discipline Using External Resources (System Utilization)
It is a method of borrowing the power of surrounding elements or others beyond direct parental guidance.
Environmental Discipline (Environmental Creation): It utilizes humans' characteristic of adapting to the environment. It is divided into 'external environment' such as finding good schools or friends, and 'home environment' where parents set an example. While initial construction is difficult, it has continuous effects 24 hours a day.
Delegation Discipline (Expert Utilization): It is entrusting customized guidance to counseling centers, hospitals, etc. with professional knowledge. While cost burden is a disadvantage, in recent times, 'AI discipline' that can analyze children and reflect parents' values without cost burden can also be called delegation discipline.
