Cases of individuals fleeing without appearing on sentencing dates after being sentenced to imprisonment or incarceration are increasing each year. In 2023, there were 6,075 such cases, and under current law, there are no separate penalty provisions for these fleeing acts, making it difficult to hold offenders accountable. To address this issue, Rep. Park Eun-jeong of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party has proposed an 'Anti-Fugitive Law' to punish those with unexecuted prison sentences. According to the amendment, it would allow for punishment of those who flee without appearing on sentencing dates despite being sentenced to imprisonment at trial, or who flee while on release of execution of detention or on bail.
