[Seoul=Newsis] Reporter Kang Young-jin = The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on the 24th (local time) that it would ban imports of bicycles manufactured by Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd., the world's largest bicycle manufacturer in Taiwan.
According to the New York Times (NYT), CBP issued a "withhold release order" immediately detaining bicycles, parts and accessories manufactured by Giant in Taiwan.
Giant is the world's largest bicycle manufacturer, widely distributed in major U.S. retail stores such as Walmart, as well as small bicycle shops.
CBP said that its investigation of Giant found signs of forced labor, including abusive working and living conditions, debt bondage, wage arrears, and excessive overtime.
CBP emphasized that these factors allowed Giant to sell products at lower prices than U.S. bicycle manufacturers, resulting in "millions of dollars in unfair profits."
This CBP order comes amid trade agreement negotiations between the two governments.
Giant Manufacturing was founded in Taiwan in the 1970s and operates production plants in China, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Vietnam.
The products for which CBP issued a withhold release order currently amount to 53 items. Most of them were issued before former President Donald Trump took office.
Imported goods subject to a withhold release order can be discarded, returned, or challenged as legally imported goods.
The Trump administration issued withhold release orders for one Chinese fishing vessel and one Korean sea salt producer this year.
In contrast, in March, a withhold release order against a sugar company in the Dominican Republic, which is politically connected to Trump, was quietly lifted.
