The Korea Land and Geospatial Information Corporation (KLOS) announced on the 4th that it would postpone the decision on the export of 5,000 1:1 scale commercial digital maps requested by Apple and extend the processing period by 60 days. This extends the deadline for processing Apple's export application to December 8th.
The Surveying and Mapping Committee, which deliberates and decides on the overseas export of map information, includes the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the National Intelligence Service.
Previously, Apple submitted an application to the KLOS on June 16th requesting permission to export 5,000 1:1 scale domestic high-precision map data overseas. Apple also made the same request in February 2023, but the Korean government rejected it due to concerns about potential national security implications.
The committee also postponed its decision on Google's separate map export application last May and extended the processing period by 60 days. It then decided to extend it for another 60 days in August.
