President Trump is attempting to resume dialogue with Kim Jong-un, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea. During this time, the White House inquired with the DPAA, a U.S. military agency responsible for recovering remains, about possible actions during a North American summit. The DPAA proposed that North Korea hand over the remains of U.S. soldiers and resume joint excavation of remains, considering deploying excavation teams to Unsan and Jangjin four times a year for 45 days each, as was done until 2005. This is similar to what was discussed at the 2018 Singapore North American summit, and the DPAA hopes to use this opportunity to promote humanitarian cooperation with former enemy countries. It is estimated that the remains of 5,300 U.S. soldiers remain in North Korea, and the DPAA expects cooperation with North Korea to recover them.
