A memorial service was held on June 29, 2023, at the Sampoong Disaster Memorial Tower in front of Maeheon Citizens' Forest in Seocho-gu, Seoul, marking the 30th anniversary of the Sampoong Department Store collapse tragedy. The bereaved families honored the victims and urged the realization of a safe society. The memorial service was attended by National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik, lawmakers Park Joo-min and Yong Hye-in of the Basic Income Party, as well as bereaved families of various other disasters who extended their condolences. A survey of the bereaved families found that 63% still suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and complaints about the punishment of those responsible and demands for improvements to memorial spaces were raised. The bereaved families called for psychological support, maintenance of memorial spaces, and the installation of commemorative markers for the missing.
