Former lawmaker Kwon Seong-dong of the People Power Party was sentenced to two years in prison for illegally receiving 100 million won in political funds from the Unification Church. The registration cancellation procedure for Kwon is expected to proceed. According to the Lawyers Act, if a sentence of imprisonment or more is finalized, the lawyer's qualification will be forfeited. The Ministry of Justice issued an order to the Korean Bar Association to cancel Kwon's registration. The Korean Bar Association plans to cancel Kwon's lawyer registration this week. Kwon passed the judicial examination in 1985 and worked as a prosecutor before becoming a lawyer. He served as Senior Secretary for Legal Affairs at the Blue House during the Lee Myung-bak administration and was elected to the National Assembly in a by-election in 2009. This ruling will also result in Kwon losing his parliamentary seat.
