The Korean government plans to gradually expand the autonomous police system. This is to prevent potential side effects that may arise when the police become solely responsible for investigations due to amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act. During the expansion of the autonomous police system, the individual command of cases by provincial governors will be prohibited, and the right to file objections will be granted to the head of the autonomous police headquarters. In addition, the state will directly command national important cases, and the authority of provinces regarding the appointment of autonomous police officers will be clearly defined. As a model for expanding the autonomous police system, methods such as transferring all organizations under provincial police agencies are being considered, and it is expected to be piloted in some regions before full implementation.
