Nine current and former Unification Church executives have been indicted on charges of violating the Political Funds Act and embezzlement. They are accused of illegally donating approximately 188 million won to 132 politicians, including members of the National Assembly, from 2019 to last year, using the nationwide Unification Church organization. There are suspicions that the Unification Church used church funds to get politicians to participate in their events and expand their religious influence. Hak Ja Han, the head of the Unification Church, and Jeong Won-ju, the former chief secretary, were dismissed due to lack of evidence. Politicians were deemed not to have been aware of the origin of the church funds and were excluded from prosecution.
