A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the western mountainous region of Colombia, causing building damage in western cities such as Cali. The epicenter was located near San Jose del Palmar in Choco department, about 230 km west of Bogota, the capital, with a depth of 107 km. The earthquake was also felt in Bogota and tremors were detected as far as the border regions of neighboring countries Ecuador and Venezuela. The governor of Choco department reported building damage and injuries, stating that an assessment of the damage is underway. This earthquake occurred about a month after a series of strong earthquakes hit Venezuela last month, indicating an increase in seismic activity in South America recently.
