Following the shortage of ballots in the local elections held on June 3rd, the National Assembly formed a Special Committee on State Affairs to investigate and reform election management. The committee, extended for a month, is holding its third public hearing today to clarify additional suspicions such as errors in voter registration lists and incorrect input of voter numbers. In particular, a political battle between the ruling and opposition parties is expected regarding the re-counting of votes at polling stations in Songpa-gu. While the Democratic Party of Korea considers the re-counting process as a principle, the People Power Party insists on open re-counting with the participation of special prosecutors. Conflicts between the ruling and opposition parties are also anticipated in the operation of the National Recommendation Committee for recommending candidates for special prosecutors. It is expected that it will take considerable time until the actual launch of the special investigation.
