Smartphone users with Chinese ROMs are reporting that the NFC payment feature in Google Wallet has suddenly stopped working after an update to Google Play Services version 26.28. Although the Google Wallet app can still be used, the tap-to-pay feature is no longer available on these devices. It is suspected that Google Play Services can detect specific Chinese firmware and disable the NFC payment function as a restriction. This restriction appears to only apply to devices with Chinese ROMs and has not yet affected other Google apps. Google itself has not yet issued an official statement regarding this change, but some users have reported that the tap-to-pay feature is working again after changes on Google's server side.
