President Lee Jae-myung has consistently pushed for the appointment of special inspectors since taking office. The Democratic Party of Korea nominated lawyer Choi Gil-soo, while the People Power Party nominated lawyer Kang Ji-sik as candidates for special inspectors. The presidential office said it would swiftly appoint a candidate once they are recommended through a vote in the National Assembly. Special inspectors investigate corrupt practices by the president's relatives or those with special relationships, and their term is three years. The National Assembly recommends three candidates from among legal professionals upon request from the president. The president then designates one of them, who undergoes a personnel hearing in the National Assembly before being appointed.
