6일 업계에 따르면 네이버는 한강을 기준으로 남쪽과 북쪽에 물류센터를 확보하기 위해 후보 부지를 들여다보고 있다. 네이버는 부지를 사서 물류센터를 짓는 방안과 기존 물류센터를 인수하거나 장기 임차하는 방안 등을 놓고 고심하고 있다.

2001년 쇼핑 사업을 시작한 네이버는 2019년까지 배송에 일절 관여하지 않고 판매자가 물류회사를 선정하도록 하는 방식으로 사업을 했다. 2020년 CJ대한통운과 협력 관계를 맺었고, 이후 스타트업인 파스토와 품고 등이 네이버 물류 체계에 들어왔다. 판매자는 이들 물류회사 중 한 곳을 선정하면 된다.
이런 외부 물류 방식은 창고를 보유하지 않고 물류회사의 보관·포장·배송 역량을 활용할 수 있어 비용 부담을 줄여줬다. 네이버는 이들 회사를 활용해 ‘도착보장’과 ‘N배송’ 등의 이름으로 ‘로켓배송’을 앞세운 쿠팡에 대응해왔다.
하지만 배송 경쟁이 심해지는 상황에서 이 같은 외부 배송 방식으로는 이길 수 없다고 판단했다는 설명이다. e커머스업계 관계자는 “외부 회사 협력 방식은 나름대로 장점이 있지만 출고 마감 시간과 재고 배치, 배송 품질, 물류 단가를 쇼핑회사가 직접 통제하기 어려운 구조”라며 “10조원 이상을 투자해 전국에 물류망을 구축한 쿠팡은 자동화와 데이터 기반 운영으로 배송 효율을 끌어올렸다”고 했다.
네이버는 수도권에 자체 물류거점을 조성하는 것을 시작으로 전국에 물류센터를 구축해 나간다는 계획이다. 이와 함께 보관, 포장, 출고뿐만 아니라 라스트마일(소비자와 만나는 최종 배송 구간) 배송 인력도 확보해 나갈 것으로 알려졌다. 업계는 네이버가 쿠팡 자체 배송 인력인 ‘쿠팡친구’(옛 쿠팡맨)처럼 앞으로 ‘네이버친구’ 모델도 검토할 수 있다고 보고 있다.
