(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Young-seop and Lee Do-hoon = Former President Yoon Seok-yeol, who was indicted on charges of treason, was sentenced to death, the highest penalty in court.
The special prosecution team for treason led by Eun-seok Cho requested this sentence at the decision hearing held on the 13th by Judge Gi-yeon Ji of the Criminal Division 25 of the Seoul Central District Court.
"The emergency martial law incident abandoned its responsibility to protect the Constitution and promote national freedom, and fundamentally violated national security and the survival of the people," said Eok-soo Park, special prosecutor. "Considering the purpose, means, and method of execution, it is characterized as anti-state activity." He also criticized that "the identity of the anti-state forces that former President Yoon cited as justification for declaring martial law has been clearly revealed."
He further denounced it as "a serious constitutional violation incident by anti-state forces, unprecedented in constitutional history, such as the storming of the National Assembly and the Election Management Committee, and attempts to cut off broadcasting companies."
