'RGB TV but no R'... Chinese TCL sparks controversy over 'fake' RGB TV
Omdia analysis..."Not pure RGB chips, but B·G chips with red phosphor added to reduce costs"
(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Min-ji = Chinese TV maker TCL has been accused of false advertising for its budget RGB (red·green·blue) mini LED TV.
According to the latest report from market research firm Omdia on July 1st, TCL's budget RGB mini LED TV uses only two B chips and one G chip instead of an 'R' chip.
RGB TVs separate backlight into red (R), green (G), and blue (B) to enhance color reproduction and brightness simultaneously. They are considered to offer innovative picture quality compared to conventional white LED-based TVs.
Omdia analyzed TCL's budget model 'Q9M', stating that it "uses blue and green chips instead of pure RGB chips, combined with a (red) phosphor to reduce costs."
R chips are more expensive than B and G chips. TCL appears to have unified all chips with relatively cheaper B and G chips and added a red phosphor on top to create red light.
Despite the absence of R chips, TCL continues to market this product as an 'RGB mini LED TV'.
A display industry insider said, "In a situation where there are criticisms about the picture quality of pure RGB chips used in Chinese products, the picture quality competitiveness of RGB mini LED TVs without R will be even lower." They also expressed concern that "consumers may end up buying 'RGB' mini LED TVs with only superficial differences from existing mini LED TVs at higher prices due to cost-cutting technologies being applied for market expansion."
