Dogs can also go to restaurants... Pet entry allowed from March
Hygiene and safety standards must be met... Food truck operating range also expanded
Seoul=News1) Reporter Yoo-ri Cho = Starting in March, general restaurants and other businesses can operate as pet-friendly establishments if they meet certain hygiene and safety standards.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 2nd that it revised and promulgated the enforcement regulations of the Food Sanitation Act, which stipulate facility standards for pet-friendly restaurants and matters to be observed by operators. The new rules will take effect in March.
Accordingly, among those who operate or intend to operate general restaurants, rest area restaurants, bakeries, etc., those who comply with hygiene and safety management standards can operate as pet-friendly restaurants. However, if they violate this rule, they will be subject to administrative penalties such as business suspension and corrective orders.
Prior to this revision, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety conducted a regulatory sandbox pilot project for about two years from April 2023. As a result, it confirmed that pet-friendly restaurants had positive effects such as improvement in hygiene and safety levels, and increased satisfaction among businesses and consumers.
The types of pets allowed to enter pet-friendly restaurants are limited to dogs and cats. In this case, partitions, fences, etc. must be installed to prevent pets from entering food handling facilities such as kitchens and ingredient storage warehouses for hygiene management purposes.
Operators who operate or intend to operate pet-friendly restaurants should post signs or notices at the entrance of their establishments so that customers can recognize them as pet-friendly businesses before entering.
Operators must also post notices stating that pets cannot move freely away from their owners, and provide pet-specific chairs, cages, leash hooks, etc. They should maintain sufficient spacing between customer tables and walkways to prevent pets from coming into contact with other customers or animals. It is also necessary to indicate that unvaccinated pets are restricted from entering.
