CES 2026: Samsung's 'Wrinkle-Free' Foldable Display: The Secret Behind It
Imagine folding stress (folding pressure) as a rushing river, and the structure beneath the foldable display as a dam holding it back. Conventional foldable screens were designed like a solid, continuous, and robust 'monolithic dam'. While seemingly ideal, once water pressure builds up, a rigid dam can only react in one way: all the force concentrates on its weakest point. As a result, stress doesn't repeatedly concentrate on a single line. With the elimination of a consistent stress path, permanent wrinkles cannot form on the screen.
What makes this solution particularly elegant is that it doesn't force the material's limitations. It doesn't demand an impossibly soft OLED layer or extreme flexibility. Instead, it accepts the simple truth that 'force is inevitable'. True innovation lies not in eliminating the force but in guiding it, dispersing it, and gently mitigating it so that it doesn't lead to destructive consequences.
Ultimately, Samsung's wrinkle-free foldable display is a product of intelligent stress management, not its elimination. Just as modern flood control systems don't build dams that won't break but channel water safely to prevent disasters, this display technology allows folding stress while preventing scarring.
