(Seoul=Yonhapnews) Reporters Lee Young-seop and Lee Do-heun = Former President Yoon Suk-yeol, indicted on charges of leading an insurrection, was sentenced to death, the maximum penalty under law.
The special prosecution team for insurrection, led by Cho Eun-seok, requested at a final ruling hearing held on the 13th before the 25th Criminal Panel of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Ji Gwi-yeon) that the court issue such a sentence.
Deputy Prosecutor Park Eok-soo stated, "The emergency martial law incident abandoned the duty to uphold the constitution and promote citizens' freedoms, and essentially violated national security and national survival. In terms of its purpose, means, and execution methods, it has the character of anti-state activities," and criticized, "It has become clear who the anti-state forces were that former President Yoon pointed to as justification for declaring emergency martial law."
He further denounced it as "a serious incident of constitutional destruction by anti-state forces—breaches into the National Assembly and the National Election Commission, attempts to cut off power and water to media outlets, and other actions unprecedented in constitutional history."
