[Big Tech Column] Tesla, FSD Purchase Ends After February 14...Only $99/Month Subscription Survives
Tesla will completely end the one-time purchase option for Full Self-Driving (FSD) software after February 14, 2026, and execute a strategic shift to keep only the $99/month subscription model.
CEO Elon Musk directly announced on X (formerly Twitter) on January 14: "Tesla will stop selling FSD after February 14. After that, FSD will only be available through monthly subscription," making a bold decision to eliminate the existing $8,000 one-time purchase option.
The FSD subscription fee has been halved from $199 to $99 as of April 2024, and Tesla has been attempting to increase usage through a free one-month trial. However, as of Q3 2025, only 12% of all vehicles have customers paying for FSD, and subscription revenue has declined compared to the same period last year.

The subscription conversion strengthens the software business, which generates annual revenue of $5.5 billion based on 3 million FSD users, and is essential to achieving Musk's compensation package target of 10 million subscriptions (a condition for $1 trillion payout).
Existing purchasers retain ownership, but targeting new and converted customers, Tesla is expected to accelerate unsupervised FSD commercialization through accelerated data collection and regulatory approval. Analysts evaluate this change as an "infrastructure investment" for accelerating the autonomous driving S-curve.
