It seems that you will be able to fully charge your electric car while shopping at the mart for 2 hours or watching a movie in the future. This is because the government has established a 'medium-speed' range between 'fast' and 'slow' charging speeds for electric vehicle chargers.
Until now, the supply capacity of chargers was classified as fast (40 kW or more) and slow (less than 40 kW) based on 40 kilowatts (kW). Slow chargers, mainly used in homes or public places, charged at a speed of 3 to 7 kW, taking 8 to 10 hours to fully charge. Fast chargers with a capacity of 50 to 350 kW, used in highway rest areas, etc., could be fully charged in 30 minutes to 1 hour, but the burden on power supply facilities was high and installation costs were expensive. For this reason, it was not easy to install them in mart or movie theater parking lots. Even if there were fast chargers, users couldn't comfortably shop for about 2 hours or watch a movie. Sometimes they even received calls asking them to remove their car for the next user.
Therefore, the government plans to operate charging facilities as 'slow-medium-fast' in three categories from this year. Slow was redefined as less than 30 kW, medium as 30 to 50 kW, and fast as over 50 kW. Charging costs are expected to be set between fast (about 2,700 won per 100 km) and slow (about 1,100 won).
However, there will be no immediate changes that electric vehicle users can directly feel. A Ministry of Climate Environment official explained, "This time, we have presented the criteria for changing the classification system," adding, "Based on this, management and performance standards will be established."
