The Act on the Development and Trust of Artificial Intelligence (AI Basic Law) came into effect on the 22nd.
As a comprehensive law governing AI-related matters, it is the first of its kind in the world.
With the emergence of regulations at a time when AI technology is just beginning to blossom, the AI model and service development industry is focusing on aspects that could immediately impact businesses, such as "high-impact AI business operator responsibility" and "mandatory display of AI use."
The government argues that norms are needed to protect society from the harms of advanced AI, such as deepfakes, misinformation, and human rights violations. Taking industry concerns into account, it intends to attempt a "gradual implementation" by deferring the exercise of its fact-checking authority or imposition of fines for more than a year.
