Samsung Electronics raises NAND flash memory prices by 100% in Q1, "Supply cannot keep up with demand"
Samsung Electronics has more than doubled the price of NAND flash memory in the first quarter. Demand for NAND-based storage devices has surged due to the spread of artificial intelligence (AI), but supply has not increased significantly. The memory shortage and price increase trend are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
According to industry sources on the 25th, Samsung Electronics raised the NAND flash supply price by more than 100% in the first quarter of this year. It is understood that contracts with major customers were completed at the end of last year and the increased prices have been applied since January. Following DRAM's price increase of up to nearly 70%, the upward trend has significantly expanded to NAND.
The NAND price hike is not a recent phenomenon. Since the end of last year, as the memory supply shortage intensified, NAND has also been affected.
According to market research firm TrendForce, the NAND price increase rate in the fourth quarter of last year was 33~38% compared to the previous quarter. The first quarter of this year was expected to see a similar level of increase, but the actual supply price exceeded that.
Samsung Electronics is not the only company doubling NAND prices. SK Hynix is also observed to be at a similar level. The two companies are ranked 1st and 2nd in the NAND market share. Overseas securities firms such as Nomura have reported that SanDisk, the fifth-largest player in the market, plans to raise NAND prices by 100% this year.
An industry insider said, "Just like DRAM, NAND manufacturers are also joining the price hike," and added, "It is virtually inevitable that NAND market prices will rise across the board."
