Sony Withdraws from the Blu-ray Disc Recorder Market
Sony Japan announced that it will discontinue global sales of all Blu-ray recorder models currently on the market and has no plans for successor models. In July 2024, Sony reduced its workforce in the optical media division by 40%. This was followed by confirmation in January 2025 of the discontinuation of production of recordable Blu-ray discs, MiniDiscs (MiniDisc) and cassette tapes.
Therefore, this latest development is not surprising at all.
"We plan to sequentially discontinue shipments of all Blu-ray disc recorder models after February 2026. There will be no successor models. We sincerely thank you for your patronage over the years," Sony Japan announced.
Applies Only to Blu-ray Recorders
This withdrawal applies only to Blu-ray recorders that include a built-in Blu-ray player. Currently, there are no plans to discontinue production of general Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players for movie playback. (Photo caption: One of Sony's recent Blu-ray recorder lineups, the BDZ model)
Sony announced that with today's announcement, the 2024 BDZ-ZW1900 recorder and the 2023 BDZ-FBT4200, BDZ-FBT2200, and BDZ-FBW2200 recorders have been discontinued. The remaining models are also scheduled to be phased out gradually after February 2026.
Unlike Oppo, Samsung, and LG, which have completely abandoned the Blu-ray player business, Sony, Panasonic, and a few high-end niche brands still offer Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players.
However, whether Sony will withdraw more broadly from the optical media sector remains to be seen, as it depends on the partnership with TCL scheduled for next year.
