It feels like the year 2024 just started, and it's already December... The season for receiving calendars and diaries as gifts is here. ^^

I have compiled a list of Indonesian public holidays for 2025. When sending my children to school, I realized that since Korean schools also observe Korean holidays... and Indonesian schools observe Indonesian holidays... there are many days when they don't go to school, and they often don't even know why they have those days off. So, this time, I looked into the meaning of Indonesian public holidays and what events and commemorative activities are held.

The Ascension of Prophet Muhammad, also known as "Mi'raj," is believed to be a sacred journey undertaken by Muhammad at night, during which he ascended to heaven. It is said that during this event, Muhammad directly communicated with Allah (God) and received important doctrines and laws of Islam.

Characteristics: Nyepi is a celebration of the Balinese Hindu New Year. It has a unique characteristic, known as "the Day of Silence," where complete silence and abstinence are required. On this day, all activities on Bali Island cease. People do not go out, refrain from making fires or loud noises, and all commercial activities are suspended. This is a time for self-reflection and meditation, marking an important ritual to welcome the new year.

Key Features of Nyepi:

   - Day of Silence: Balinese residents stay indoors, refrain from making noise, and do not turn on TVs or radios. Even the airport is closed.

Saka Calendar of Balinese Hinduism

Nyepi is determined according to the Saka calendar. The Saka calendar is one of the Hindu calendar systems, with its starting year set at 78 AD. The new year according to this calendar coincides with Nyepi and usually falls between mid-March and early April.

Activities After Nyepi

Nyepi itself is a day of abstinence, but it is followed by joyous celebrations marking the new year. After Nyepi ends, people return to their daily routines and various rituals and activities begin to welcome the new year.

Meaning and Purpose of Nyepi

Nyepi is more than just a New Year's celebration; it is considered an important day for self-reflection, purification, and new beginnings. Balinese Hindus use this day to spend time alone, purify their bodies and minds, and prepare for the new year. The burning of Ogoh-Ogoh effigies is also a significant symbolic act, representing the expulsion of evil spirits and welcoming the new year with clean energy.
