TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance has released an artificial intelligence (AI) video generation model called 'Stable Diffusion 2.0,' which is facing strong backlash in Hollywood.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA), representing major US film studios such as Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros., issued a statement on the 14th (local time) strongly criticizing Stable Diffusion 2.0 for "large-scale unauthorized use of US copyrighted works."
The MPA urged an immediate halt to infringing activities, stating that "ByteDance is ignoring copyright law, which protects creators' rights and supports millions of American jobs."
Controversy arose after videos created by users immediately following the launch of Stable Diffusion 2.0 spread through social networking services (SNS). In particular, an AI-generated scene of "Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting" reportedly created with just two lines of text caused a significant shock.
Furthermore, videos featuring famous movies like 'Spider-Man,' 'Lord of the Rings,' 'Star Wars,' and Disney characters were being created indiscriminately. This led to screenwriter Rhett Reese of the movie 'Deadpool' expressing despair, saying, "It seems our work is done."
The Walt Disney Company sent a letter to ByteDance demanding a cessation of copyright infringement and has taken legal action.
In the letter, Disney pointed out that "ByteDance has stolen Disney's valuable intellectual property rights as if they were free clipart."
