iOS 27 aims to improve battery life through code cleanup and interface tweaks
In today's 'Power On' newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman shared several new details about Apple's upcoming software release, iOS 27. Apple aims to achieve this by 'tidying' its codebase, upgrading older apps, and making subtle tweaks to Liquid Glass, ultimately leading to improved battery life.
It was previously reported that iOS 27 would primarily focus on performance enhancements and stability. However, today's report includes three key details on how the company plans to achieve this:
-Removing 'scraps' of old code
-Making some interface 'tweaks' (no major changes)
-Minor upgrades to older apps to make them 'work better'
In the report, Gurman described iOS as 'a bit of a mess under the hood'. If you've been using Apple's software in recent years, you've likely noticed an increase in bugs, occasional performance drops, and reduced battery life. Apple's software quality was once a strong point, so this recent decline has been undeniably disappointing.
Along with the overall code cleanup effort, Gurman reported that engineers are working to deliver better battery life:
"The company hopes that these underlying code changes will result in efficiency gains, ultimately providing users with more juice. Whether Apple will actually market these improvements or simply treat them as a byproduct of the cleanup effort remains unclear."
Finally, Apple is also focusing on improving AI features in iOS 27. Bloomberg recently reported that some core Siri features promised at WWDC 2024 would be pushed back to iOS 27. There are also rumors that Apple is developing a kind of Siri chatbot for iOS 27, and more information may be revealed as the June keynote approaches.
