If you own an LG G5 or C5 OLED TV, you may have noticed that the Dolby Vision (Dolby Vision) HDR experience has suddenly become much brighter and more aesthetically pleasing. This is because the company quietly released a significant firmware update to address concerns about dark Dolby Vision content, and dozens of great reviews are already pouring in.

The r/LG_UserHub Reddit community is filled with posts from happy G5 TV owners sharing "before and after" images showing just how much better Dolby Vision HDR has become. Most images show dramatic improvements in brightness, revealing many more details by removing deep shadows and creating a more vibrant picture.

LG hasn't officially announced this update, but Reddit user Stanley083 posted a screenshot of the changelog summarizing the company's work. According to the screenshot, the main purpose of this update is "to fix an issue where Dolby Vision content (especially 'Cinema Home' mode) appeared noticeably darker than standard HDR10 content."

However, LG applied the brightness enhancement magic not only to Cinema Home mode but also to four Dolby Vision picture modes: Vivid, Game, and Standard. Filmmaker Mode remains unchanged, as its core is to preserve the original intent of the filmmakers and maintain reference standards. Since Dolby Vision HDR changes the way the screen displays images, it doesn't really do that, so there's not much point in changing anything. Therefore, most content will likely appear significantly darker when viewed in Filmmaker Mode.

LG hasn't explained exactly how they fixed this problem, but most Redditors seem satisfied with the results, and the general consensus is that it provides a much better viewing experience in bright rooms. In such environments, people have difficulty perceiving details in dark images.

Reddit user International-Oil377 posted an image above and below with the settings used on his G5 OLED TV. He said that while highlights aren't as prominent as Filmmaker Mode, there is still a significant impact in many cases, writing: "The most interesting thing is that Cinema Home is now significantly brighter than Filmmaker Mode." Although it doesn't reach the level of Vivid mode.

It's still unclear how much of a difference this update has made to the Dolby Vision HDR experience on the LG C5. We haven't seen any screenshots from C5 owners that we can compare yet. This could suggest that the update didn't have as much impact on the C5, but we can't be sure until we see evidence.

It remains to be seen whether LG will roll out this update for the B5 OLED TV, which uses a significantly darker panel and may therefore benefit even more.
