Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently said that some companies may be using artificial intelligence as an excuse for the mass layoffs that have swept the tech industry and related fields in recent months.
Altman said in a CNBC-TV18 interview during the 'India AI Impact Summit' held in India on Thursday,
"I don't know exactly what percentage, but there are cases of 'AI washing' (AI washing) where layoffs that would have happened anyway are being blamed on AI. At the same time, there are also cases where AI is actually leading to a reduction in manpower across various occupations."
He went on to say that as AI takes over more human jobs, such cases will likely increase. This is also part of OpenAI's business model. Altman also predicted last summer that technological advancements could lead to the "disappearance of entire classes of jobs" but that new jobs would fill those vacancies.
