The government has approved Google's request to export high-precision maps, subject to strict security conditions.
Specifically, the government decided to approve the request on the condition that △ When providing satellite and aerial photographs of South Korean territory in global services such as Google Maps and Google Earth, processed images with security measures completed will be used, and military and security facilities will be masked in past time-series images and Street View provided by Google Earth. △ Coordinates displayed for South Korean territory in global services of Google Maps and Google Earth will be removed and exposure will be limited. △ Only the original data processed on servers owned domestically by Google's domestic partner companies, and data that has undergone government review and confirmation, such as publication review, will be exported. Navigation and route finding services will only export limited necessary data. Sensitive data such as contour lines was excluded from the export target for security reasons.
Google's domestic server installation, which had been cited as a concern, did not take place. Servers are a major element of 'fixed business establishments,' which are subject to corporate tax judgments, and Google avoided sensitive tax issues by accepting the government's security-related requests.
