Why did Mercedes-Benz hide the name of its electric car battery?
The Fair Trade Commission's sanctions decision on the 10th is not just a simple case of missing labeling. It means that Mercedes-Benz concealed information about the manufacturer of the battery cell, a key component of electric vehicles, and instead promoted the excellence of other companies' batteries as a sales point to consumers.
The FTC imposed a corrective order, a public announcement order, and a fine of 11.239 billion won on Mercedes-Benz Korea and its German headquarters for this act, and decided to prosecute the two companies.
The core issue is consumer deception. Although a significant number of EQE and EQS models of Benz electric vehicles actually used battery cells from Farasis in China, Benz led consumers to believe that they were using products from CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, through dealer education and sales presentations.
