Hyundai Motor and Kia announced on the 17th that they will expand their strategic collaboration with NVIDIA in the future mobility field, including autonomous driving and SDVs (software-defined vehicles).
The two companies will jointly develop next-generation autonomous driving solutions by combining Hyundai Motor and Kia's own SDV capabilities with NVIDIA's expertise in autonomous driving technology. Hyundai Motor and Kia, which are developing SDV vehicles based on a quality and safety philosophy, will preemptively apply NVIDIA's Level 2 or higher autonomous driving technology to some models.
In the long term, they plan to establish an autonomous driving cooperation system that extends to Level 4 robotaxis. Centered around 'Motional,' a US-based autonomous driving joint venture, they will accelerate comprehensive discussions for technological advancement of Level 4 robotaxis and seek to strengthen competitiveness in technology and services.
The expansion of collaboration with NVIDIA is a strategic decision at the Hyundai Motor Group level to accelerate the internalization of autonomous driving technology. To this end, Hyundai Motor Group will introduce 'NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion' and build a new integrated architecture that can be expanded from Level 2 to Level 4 autonomous driving.
Hyperion is a reference design structure that bundles essential hardware for autonomous driving, such as high-performance central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), sensors, and cameras. By adding the experience accumulated by Hyundai Motor Group, one of the top three global automakers, to this standard design structure, it will be possible to develop an optimized SDV architecture.
The strategic collaboration with NVIDIA is also expected to be a great help to Hyundai Motor Group in terms of AI (artificial intelligence) internalization. Hyundai Motor Group will establish a data virtuous cycle system through the introduction of Hyperion, which includes △collecting various data such as images, language, and behavior △AI learning and performance improvement △actual vehicle application △data quality improvement.
Hyundai Motor Group will actively utilize NVIDIA's extensive data and AI technology to integrate data obtained from across the group into a single learning pipeline. In the long term, it is expected that high-performance AI will collect, learn, and structure high-quality real-road data by itself, thereby enhancing Hyundai Motor Group's autonomous driving competitiveness.
Ultimately, Hyundai Motor Group aims to internalize cutting-edge autonomous driving technology and provide it to customers. In addition to collaborating with global tech companies, the company plans to continue its own technological development to strengthen its global competitiveness in the autonomous driving field from multiple angles.
