An open-source project that allows users to open and edit HWP and HWPX files in the Chrome browser has emerged and is garnering attention from the developer community. Hangul & Computer (Hancom) stated that it has no plans for legal action against the project and views it positively overall.
According to the IT industry on the 17th, 'rHWP' released by developer Edward Kim is a browser extension that can be installed from the Chrome Web Store and allows users to open and modify HWP and HWPX format documents directly in the browser without additional software. The fact that it was distributed as an open-source project with freely available source code and completed in approximately three weeks through collaboration between the developer and AI has become a topic of discussion in the community.
This is also being noted as a case that demonstrates how AI-assisted development methods are rapidly lowering the barriers to entry in the existing software market. The domestic IT community has been flooded with reactions saying "The troublesome HWP issue on Mac and Linux has been solved." Some have also expressed concern-tinged reactions that it could impact Hancom Office license sales.
Hancom has suggested it has no immediate plans for legal action against this project. Hancom stated: "Since disclosing the internal structure of the HWP document format in 2010, we view positively the expansion of the document utilization ecosystem centered on HWP and HWPX," and "Various developers and communities creating new usage environments and tools by utilizing the document format is a natural progression of an open technological ecosystem."
They added: "These changes can also help improve user convenience and expand document accessibility," and "We are comprehensively reviewing related developments and all relevant matters." [Remainder of content omitted]
