I am a person who primarily rides enduro and downhill MTB.
When doing downhill, it feels like I'm doing lunges and squats at a speed of over 10 times per second, so my legs get very tired, and I usually do leg strengthening training on a road bike.
Then one day, I suddenly had this thought.
When configuring the wheelset for MTB, the wheels and tires are matched with a front 29-inch/2.5-2.6 and rear 27.5-inch/2.4 configuration. We call this a mullet configuration...
This is a setting that increases grip and ability to overcome bumps with the front's large-diameter wide tires, and increases responsiveness and agility with the rear's relatively small-diameter and thin tires.
When I applied this from the perspective of a road bike, assuming I matched a front wheel 60mm/30c and rear wheel 50mm/28c configuration, I thought it would definitely be a setting that has the advantage of high speed due to improved grip and aerodynamic performance, and would have enhanced responsiveness due to the relatively low rim height of the rear wheel.
So when I searched around, Specialized had already released the Roval Rapid CLX3 wheels in a 5148 configuration as a mullet (I'll just call the rim height difference a mullet as well). It was the moment my speculation turned into certainty.
Since then, I can't stop thinking about wanting to change my wheelset. I think mullet wheels with front high-rim and rear low-rim will also become the mainstream in the road bike scene.
I would appreciate your free opinions.
