PlayStation 6 PSSR Frame Generation Gets One Step Closer to Reality, Sony Doubles Down on AI Interpolation Research

The possibility that the PlayStation 6 will support frame generation through PSSR has become very concrete.
The launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro marked the debut of AI-based upscaling in the console space, with PSSR. Since the release of the latest version of the upscaler, image quality has been significantly improved compared to when it was first launched. According to a senior research scientist's LinkedIn profile at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), there is a high possibility that this upscaler will provide AI-based frame generation capabilities on the PlayStation 6.
According to MP1st, Ayan Kumar Bhunia has been researching machine learning and computer vision at SIE since December 2023. A notable highlight of his career with the company is that he "led core research for a frame interpolation pipeline for next-generation PlayStation platforms," which resulted in two patent applications.
For those who are unfamiliar, frame interpolation is a key component of frame generation technology. It analyzes data between two existing rendered frames to generate additional frames. Therefore, PSSR frame generation combined with the specifications of the PlayStation 6 feels like a very concrete possibility. With system specs, most games will likely achieve a baseline frame rate of 60 FPS, which is crucial for providing a great gaming experience without excessive input lag.
In addition to researching the next version of PSSR, including support for PlayStation 6, and efforts to use AI in "all kinds of workflows," Sony is also working on upgrading its cloud game streaming service. Along with supporting more games, the hardware powering the service will be significantly upgraded by switching from the current PCIe Gen4 NVMe to Gen 5 NVMe, which offers twice the sequential read and write performance.
PSSR frame generation on the PlayStation 6 could make path tracing (path tracing) more feasible on the system. However, through additional optimization, it may be closer to a "nice-to-have" feature rather than an essential one. During GDC 2026, Codemasters showcased some of these advanced technologies in F1 25 and presented a game demo running on the PlayStation 5 Pro with path tracing enabled and achieving 30 FPS.
No matter how AI is utilized to deliver next-generation experiences in future systems, exciting times are undoubtedly ahead.
