5 Things You Need to Know About Changes Coming to Windows 11

1. Windows Update Pause Control

More granular control features have been added to Windows Update, allowing you to effectively postpone automatic updates indefinitely.

The existing 35-day limit is maintained, but you can reschedule as many times as you want.

However, you must manually extend it before the pause period ends, and if you miss it, the system will automatically install updates.

The setup is simple.

Go to Settings > Windows Update, and use the newly added calendar selection feature to set your device to not automatically install updates.

2. Power Menu Redesigned to Stop Real-Time Updates

The power menu is also being redesigned to improve the update experience. Update-related tasks are now separated from general shutdown and restart options.

The new menu provides the following options:

* Shutdown After Update

* Restart After Update

* Shutdown

* Restart

In other words, even if updates requiring reboot are pending, selecting normal shutdown or restart will perform only that action without installing updates.

3. Improved Update Information Visibility and Reduced Reboot Frequency

The development team is also working on improvements to display update contents more clearly.

For example, driver updates now show more specifically what hardware is related—such as battery, audio, display—instead of vague names.

Additionally, a new collapsible "Available Updates" section has been added to the Windows Update page, allowing you to see pending system updates, firmware, and drivers at a glance.

Furthermore, firmware, driver, and other product updates will be integrated into the monthly system update cycle to reduce inconvenience from frequent reboots.

As a result, most updates will be handled with just one monthly reboot, significantly reducing the number of reboots.

4. Automatic Recovery During Updates

For a long time, many users have experienced update installation failures.

When a specific patch failed to install, users often had to troubleshoot manually or manually download and install packages from Microsoft's Update Catalog. However, the system now has a feature that automatically detects and recovers from installation issues in the background.

This should reduce the burden of users having to repeatedly troubleshoot issues themselves.

5. Allowing Update Skip During Initial Setup (OOBE)

Windows 11 now supports skipping system updates during the initial setup process (OOBE).

However, if you skip updates, the latest drivers, features, and security patches will not be installed until you manually run updates or re-enable automatic updates.

Assessment

These changes are clearly aimed at reducing user inconvenience, but they are more gradual improvements to existing problems rather than providing complete control.

Positively, the improved power menu in particular solves a long-standing inconvenience and will be a noticeable daily change.

Consolidating updates on a monthly basis to reduce reboots is also a much-needed improvement, though quite overdue.

However, I'm still not confident whether Microsoft is ready to give complete update control to users.

The term "indefinite update pause" sounds more flexible than it actually is, but ultimately users must manually extend it repeatedly. The way automatic updates resume the moment you forget to extend is still inconvenient for users.

The fact that Microsoft requires confirming the skip updates option twice during initial setup shows that Microsoft still prefers users to follow the automatic update path by default.

These changes have made Windows Update less annoying, but not completely free.

The new controls and visibility improvements will certainly help most users, but if you expect complete update control, it may still fall somewhat short.
