The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Choi Hwi-young, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Culture) will operate the e-book library 'On Book Room' in collaboration with the Korea Publishing Culture Industry Promotion Institute (President Kim Seung-soo, hereinafter referred to as the Promotion Institute) for the second consecutive year to spread reading culture and strengthen access to digital books.
‘On Book Room’ is an e-book library service that allows users to freely use e-books and audiobooks (audiobooks) anytime, anywhere. Last year, it started operation for the first time and about 67,000 people joined, with more than 130,000 books borrowed. Users cited the fact that anyone can use it regardless of their place of residence and that there is no limit on the number of borrowers per book, so popular books can be read without waiting.
Monthly First Week ‘Culture Day’ Launch, Benefits Doubled When Participating in Events
This year, 'On Book Room' will open its doors on Wednesdays of the first week of every month from June 3rd to December. After a simple membership registration process, you can borrow three e-books and one audiobook (audiobook) for free for 14 days.
In particular, this year, we will significantly expand the benefits by linking 'On Book Room' with the 'Book Reading Korea' campaign and 'Culture Day'. Every Wednesday of the first and third weeks of each month, various reading activity events such as 'Who is the Nth subscriber?', 'Write a one-line review of the book', and 'Reading quiz event' will be held through the 'On Book Room' community. Participants will be provided with doubled usage, six e-books per month and two audiobooks.
3,000 New Books Added Every Month, Enhanced Convenience with Real-Time Audiobook Playback Function
This year, 'On Book Room' will have a total of 220,000 e-books and audiobooks (audiobooks), about 70,000 more than last year. It also plans to add more than 3,000 new books every month to expand the selection for users. In addition, a new real-time playback (streaming) function has been added that allows you to listen to audiobooks without downloading them, enhancing convenience. We will also provide a monthly recommended book service reflecting the latest trends and trends, such as 'novels good to read during vacation', 'poems and essays good to read on the way to work', and 'Nobel Prize in Literature winners'.
Meanwhile, to popularize audiobooks and expand new readers, we will link the 'On Book Room' service with local tourism, hobbies, etc. This year, from October to November, we will operate a program that provides opportunities to experience audiobooks while enjoying a walking tour along the 'Seon Seong Waterway', a representative tourist destination in Andong City.
The 'On Book Room' service can be accessed by connecting to the dedicated community (onbook.dkyobobook.co.kr) or searching for 'On Book Room' in the Kyobo Bookstore digital library app.
Choi Seong-hee, Director of Content and Media Industry at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, "Recently, the reading rate among young adults has rebounded, and the transition to digital reading is becoming more active, centered on young people. Audiobooks are also establishing themselves as a new reading medium." He added, "In line with this trend, we will expand new readers through 'On Book Room' and support everyone to enjoy reading easily and conveniently in their daily lives by linking it with the 'Book Reading Korea' campaign."
