Siri AI Blocked in EU…Apple "Privacy Risk" vs EU "Just an Excuse"

According to IT media The Verge on the 9th (local time), Apple announced that it currently has no plans to provide Siri AI for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the EU, citing the interoperability regulations of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The DMA requires major platform operators to grant data access rights similar to their own services to prevent competitors from being excluded. In the case of Siri AI, which performs tasks on behalf of users across multiple applications (hereinafter apps) and personal information, photos, messages, videos, etc., Apple's assessment is that it may have to allow competing AIs such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic similar levels of access rights.

Apple's position is that such openness could harm user privacy and security, and it will postpone the EU launch.

The European Commission pointed out that Apple has yet to come up with an interoperability solution that can meet the DMA.

Ricardo Cardoso, a spokesperson for the European Commission, said that the DMA does not prohibit Apple from launching new products and services, and that it is not up to Apple to decide which AI tools EU citizens can use.

Jan Penfrat, Senior Policy Advisor at European Digital Rights (EDRi), evaluated Apple's response as part of a lobbying strategy. Michael Veale, a professor at University College London, criticized Apple's argument that allowing broad data access to Siri AI while claiming that requiring competitors to have similar access levels is risky lacks persuasiveness.
